How to Make Fabric Gift Twine

My husband and I were married in Charleston, SC. We enjoyed a wonderful reception and stay at lovely The Charleston Place Hotel, located just at the end of the famous Charleston City Market in the heart of downtown. The market is also famous for beautiful handmade sweetgrass baskets. Watching ladies sit and make them onsite, I became interested in this art and stumbled onto a video twisting tree bark into rope. Today I am sharing how I use the same method using fabric scraps.

Instructions

Start Fabric Gift Twine

Tie 2 strips of fabric together using a double knot. PULL IT TIGHT!

The Twine Twist

Hold the tied strips with one hand tightly between the thumb and the forefinger over the tied knot.

Use the other hand pick up the top fabric strand. Wrap the strip of fabric away from you around your middle or forefinger two times.

Grip the twist tightly.

Pull the twisted fabric toward you and pull down.

Move the thumb and forefinger away from knot to hold the twist. Bring the bottom piece of fabric to the top. Repeat the process until one or both of the fabric twist strip/s only has two inches left.

Note: The tighter you twist the stronger the twine will be. I like using different amounts of pressure on the twist to create more character in the twine.

Joining Strands

When one or both of the fabric strips has only two inches of untwisted fabric left, fold in a new piece/s and continue twisting. Repeat to desired length. When you are finished, simply tie a loose knot at the end.

Option: If you want a more rustic look; tie on the pieces versus folding them in. This adds little knot tails along the twine.

Tidy Up

Snip any unwanted freys and tidy up the knot-tails if you tied on.

Finish

When you reach the desired length, tie the two ends together and clip off the ends.

How To Store Fabric Gift Twine

  1. Wrap your twine around large spools and use them for decor on a bookshelf or kitchen window.
  2. Roll the twine into a ball and lay it in a bowl in your kitchen. I keep a small ball in my fruit bowl. It adds a little color and is handy for sharing goodies.

Canned Sliced Apples

Best Canned Sliced Apples Tips

Before you start canning these tasty treats, let’s review a few facts to set you up for success. Read the info below before you get started.

What Do Apples Canned in Water Taste Like? Are they Crunchy?

They are sweet and crunchy with a rich apple flavor. I am on my third batch this season. My husband eats them right out of the jar. PS They are delicious cold.

What Kind of Apples Are Best For Canning?

Choosing the right apple variety is important for canning sliced apples and keeping the result a crisp sweet bite. Let’s save the others for delicious apple butter and apple sauce.

Apple Tips

  1. Pick an apple with a firm flesh.
  2. Choose an apple that is already naturally sweet. For example, a Granny Smith is firm but tart. Those beauties are great in a pie or covered in caramel.

Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Gala, Pink Lady, and Fuji fit the bill.

How Many Apples Do You Need For Canning?

It is truly impossible to tell you exactly how many apples you need for canning. The size, type and juiciness of the apple adds to the amount. These are my personal estimates.

  • 10 Pounds of apples = 8 pint jars of canned apple slices
  • 10 pounds of apples = 4 quart jars

There are 30 +/- medium apples in 10 pounds.

If your last jar fills a little short or a little over. No worries! Stick them in the fridge and enjoy right away.

Canning Apples In Water

In this recipe I use the water from the fruit plus two cups of filtered water. It becomes a syrup that can be used in other recipes. See below.

What You Need To Can Apples?

There are a few of my favorite tools for canning.

Salty Sweet Pecan Delight Bites, somebody say glory! I am am sure these will be served in heaven.

Growing up in Georgia, pecans were a staple year round. My best friend Jenny lived across the street from a pecan grove with a quaint pecan shop called Swint’s. They made all sorts of delicious pecan recipes to include divinity. Jenny and I would march across the street twirling our batons for a piece of that pure sugar pecan dream.

Jenny recently reminded me of another treasure from that shop when she surprised my husband and I with a Swint’s goodie box. It included Jenny’s favorite, a white chocolate covered pecan bark they call sweet dreams. The bag ingredients simply read, fried pecans and white chocolate. Talking with Jenny about how to make this sweet treat at home, she recommended adding pretzels. Genius!

I took Jenny’s tip and got busy in the Sparkle Kitchen. I tried the recipe several ways to include boiling and frying the pecans to match Swint’s. All taste testers agreed the texture was a bit grainy. Fried pecans are delicious all by themselves. I added a dash of Trader Joe’s Chilli Lime seasoning and my husband took them out. They didn’t go to waste.

Back to this recipe….

The Sparkling Charm version is super easy to make! No boiling and frying required.

These little salty sweet bites are addictive! This is a crowd pleasing recipe for any party or celebration. They also make a great hostess gift and party take-away.

Thank you Jenny! The pretzels takes these over the top!

The perfect temperature for caramels is 245°F for the perfect chew. Some people prefer a harder chew and increase the temperature. However, carmels should not exceed 260°F.

Line a medium sheet pan with parchment paper wrapping it over two sides. This will allow you to lift the Homemade Spicy Maple Caramels from the pan easily. Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.

Fill a cup with ice water. Set aside.

In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, add the heavy cream, corn syrup, maple syrup, butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Stir until butter melts and all ingredients are well combined.

Clip a candy thermometer to the side of the pot. Be careful not to let the tip touch the bottom.

Increase the heat to medium stirring occasionally. Allow the misture to simmer until it reaches 245° – 260°. If the temperature is rising too fast, lower the temperature just a bit. It should take at least 10 minutes to reach the minimum temperature of 245° and for the mixture to caramelize and achieve the deep rich buttery taste.

A QUICK RECIPE CHAT

Like mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving, everyone likes them a different way. Caramel is the same way. People like different levels of chewiness.

I prefer exactly 245° for the perfect caramel chew. I call it “the not so chewy it will pull the fillings out of your teeth texture.

So How do you decide how chewy your spicy maple caramels should be? …

Once the caramel reaches 245°F,  use a spoon to drop a little bit of molten caramel into the ice water. Lift it out and test for texture. It should be firm enough to cut, yet soft enough to chew. If needed, simmer the caramel a little longer, but do not allow it to go over 260°.

Homemade Spicy Maple Caramels

When the perfectly chewy caramel reaches your preferred texture, stir in the maple and vanilla extract.

Carefully pour the molten caramel onto the prepared sheet pan and allow it to cool for 15 minutes.

Sprinkle with finishing salt and red pepper flakes and continue to let cool for 45 minutes.

Homemade Spicy Maple Caramels

Once cooled, lift the whole sheet of spicy maple caramel out of the pan by the edges of the parchment paper and cut into desired size pieces.

Wrap each candy in small pieces of wax paper.

Easy Red Raspberry Fig ButterEasy Red Raspberry Fig Butter

Every summer I like to “put up” (southern for canning) fresh summer fruits and vegetables for winter and to share with friends. A few weeks ago at our local fresh air market I found a bounty of figs. You could say they left me feeling a little figgy because I have been using them on EVERYTHING! …Salads! …On toast mixed with honey and cream cheese! YUM! …And roasted with Brussel sprouts and bacon. I had so many I decided to can a few jars with fresh local raspberries I had frozen a few weeks prior. The flavor is a perfect combination of tangy and sweet. If you are feeling figgy too, give this recipe a try. It is delicious!

4th of July Patriotic Apple Pops

A few years back my mom sent me a fantastic 4th of July recipe using cherries soaked in fireball, dipped in white chocolate, and then dipped again in blue sprinkles.

Inspired by the colorful pretty to eat treat, this year I am dipping red apples into the white chocolate and sprinkles to make a kid friendly version for a 4th of July celebration.

Grab your aprons for some 4th of July Candy fun!

  • KID FRIENDLY + ADULT FRIENDLY – You bet! Both children and adults will enjoy these 4th of July party treats.
  • A LITTLE BIT HEALTHY – Hey! An apple a day…Am I wrong. 😉
  • DOUBLE AS A PARTY FAVOR – Tuck these in a bag and tie on a bow and you have a perfect party favor | take-away gift. (Photo Below)

Oh yes! Check out these cute Sparkling Charm Pom Pom Bracelets too!

EASY DIY! Gold Flower Power Earrings

Supplies

20 gauge gold wire
needle nose jewelry pliers
earring
ear wire shepherds with ball
rubber earring backs

Instructions

Note: When forming the petals, “about” the same size is PERFECTION! They are super cute a little uneven.

1.  Cut a piece of wire.

Note: Wire lengths vary depending on finished flower size. I cut just at 14 inches for an 1 1/2 flower.

2. Starting at either end of the wire, create the first petal by forming a loop and bringing the short end of the wire over, under, and back over the long end of the wire.

EASY DIY! Gold Flower Power Earrings

3. Using the pliers, bend the tip of the wire straight up.

EASY DIY! Gold Flower Power Earrings

4. Continue with the long end of the wire to create a figure eight. Bring the long end under and back over the center of the first just beside the wire sticking straight up.

EASY DIY! Gold Flower Power Earrings

5. Form another petal by making another loop and bringing the long end of the wire under and around the center of the figure eight. Repeat on the opposite side to form a 4th petal ending by wrapping the long wire around the center.

6. Using the same wrapping method, create the 5th and 6th petal ending with the two wires sticking straight up.

scissors
craft knife
sharpie
nail polish remover and cotton balls
white tissue paper
1/2 cup white glue mixed with 1 tablespoon of water
water colors

Instructions

1. Using a permanent marker, draw a straight line directly around the bottles center.

Up Cycle! Pretty Plastic Bottle Pencil Holders

2. Cut along the line drawn with a craft knife or scissors.

3. Two or three inches from the cut, draw another line directly around the bottle.

4. For the flaps, draw five half ovals around the bottle as seen in the photo below. Be sure to touch the marker to the line just drawn. The curve the oval should touch the cut edge.

Up Cycle! Pretty Plastic Bottle Pencil Holders

5. Carefully cut along the five half oval just drawn.

6. Remove any sharpie marks with nail polish remover and cotton balls.

7. Press each of the five folds towards the center of the bottle and apply pressure along the fold.

8. Using a sponge brush, paint the white glue mixture to small areas at a time covering each area with white tissue as you go then moving on. Note: Be careful not to cover the cut area with paper. It is okay to go over the edges. When the glue dries you can trim it. Let the glue and tissue dry completely.

9. Trim any stray tissue.

10. Use water colors and the black felt tip pen to paint designs on the tissue.

11. Coat again with white glue mixture and dry completely.

12. Fill the center with something fun.

13. Press each fold back towards the center and tie with a lovely ribbon or embellish with a pretty jewel.
