Arranging Zinnias In A Vase & My Friend Jana

A Heartfelt Story About My Friend Jana.

Peonies and hydrangeas have always been in my number two and three spots for favorite flowers, but the lovely zinnia will forever have my heart and get the number one spot as they remind me of someone special.

I shared a fondness for zinnias with my dear friend from childhood, Jana. On a last girls’ weekend at her home in Lake Forest, Illinois she placed a small bouquet beside my bed from her last zinnia harvest before the snow. That smallest charming touch was a top memory of our time together as she knew it would be. We were soul sisters when it came to “THE EXTRA” little charming touches, especially when it came to “THE EXTRA” for party planning and holiday decorating. Her last visit to my home in Alexandria, Virginia turned into two changed flights because we were exploding with our “EXTRA-NESS” amongst my twelve fully decorated Christmas trees. We were wearing matching PJ’s of course. If it had not been Christmas Eve Eve, I believe we would have had a 3rd flight change.

Jana has since passed peacefully after her 12 year battle with cancer.

As I was writing this post dedicated to Jana, I decided to look up what zinnias symbolize. I can hardly type through my tears as I share with you what I found.

Friendship, endurance, daily remembrance, goodness, and lasting affection. The Victorian meaning are thoughts of an absent friend you haven’t seen in awhile.

I will forever cherish our last visits together and I will always plant colorful zinnias on her May birthday in my garden. I will smile and think of her when the butterflies visit the blooms. SMILING!

A Few Things You Will Love About Zinnias

  1. Zinnias are annuals, meaning they go from seed to flower quickly.
  2. Zinnias are cut and come again flowers. You will get many bouquets from a season.
  3. Easy to plant, simply sprinkle the seeds where you would like color in your garden, lightly cover with soil, and water those areas for a few days. Voila! Here they come.
  4. They are heat-hardy plants and love the hot sun.
  5. Butterflies and hummingbirds love zinnias because of their rainbow of colors.
  6. Zinnias shade out weeds.
  7. Drum Roll! Zinnias do reseed themselves. If the bloom drops to the ground, it is likely they will come back the following spring.
  8. Zinnias are edible! They make a great tea and are beautiful in salads.

Cutting & Arranging In A Vase

Zinnias have the best descriptions. stars, candy canes, buttons, & color domes are my favorite. The colors make wonderful arrangements, both alone and with other flowers.

1. Cutting The Zinnias & Prepping For Arranging

Zinnias are cut and come again flowers meaning once you cut them they will re-bloom. Where you cut them makes a difference in the sturdiness of the stems and the amount of new blooms you will get.

How about this summer centerpiece to wow a crowd? Let me show you how to make a DIY Watermelon Rind Flower Arrangement.

How About A Few Fun Watermelon Facts…

Why are they Called Watermelons?

92% of the melon is water. Hence, watermelon! Did you know you can eat the entire melon? You can. Here in the south we pickle watermelon rinds. They can also be used in stews.

Where Do Watermelons Come From?

Africa! Scientists found evidence of watermelon not only from seeds discovered in tombs, but also depicted in hieroglyphics dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C.

Which is Sweeter? A round or An Oval Watermelon?

The very best watermelons are average sized but heavy for their size. The oval watermelon is more watery while the round is sweeter.

3 Great Reasons To Eat Watermelon

  1. Did you know watermelons are low in sugar. A whole cup of diced watermelon has under 10 grams of sugar.
  2. Watermelon is full of lycopene, an antioxidant that helps break down harmful free-oxygen radicals.
  3. They contain an amino acid called citrulline. The body converts this to arginine, and helps the body produce nitric oxide, a gas that relaxes the blood vessels and encourages flexibility in arteries. In turn, this can lower blood pressure.

Directions

Prepare the flowers you will use in your arrangement by snipping off the ends and placing in water.

Take a look at your watermelon and pick the prettiest side. If your watermelon doesn’t sit flat, slice a straight sliver off of the bottom to add stability.

Decide how deep you would like your watermelon rind vase to be considering which end you picked for the base. Draw a line around the melon and carefully follow your line it to slice off the top end.

Arrange the flowers in the watermelon by sticking them into the watermelon flesh.

Voilà! A beautiful Watermelon Rind Arrangement! I would love to see yours and the flowers you chose! Tag me on instagram @_SparklingCharm and use #SparklingCharmEverything!

This charming tablescape just in time for summer will bring elements of the south to your table. I am sharing how to style the “Vidalias & Magnolias -A Simple Summer Tablescape” with you. Bonus! I have pulled all sorts of links in for you to add your own “sparkle spin.”

Vidalias & Magnolias - A Simple Southern Summer Tablescape

Vidalias & Magnolias – A Simple Southern Summer Tablescape! Let’s Start with …

So what in the world made me want to add onions to a tablescape and especially pair them with magnolias?

Have you ever accidentally been doing “one thing,” and it accidently inspired “another thing,” and yet “another thing” after that? That is what happened here. I was styling a set up to shoot my Baked Vidalia Onion Dip and had pulled a very cute apron from Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James. There were tiny hints of gold highlighting the white magnolia’s in the pattern. The colors paired with the Vidalia onions perfectly. Magnolias on the apron + Vidalias in the shot = a hello summertime tablescape idea. …

And that third “another thing,” the cutest Vidalia onion party favor that can serve as a place card too. A conversation starter for sure, but a treat after they taste the Vidalia onion recipes you served at your party.

Why are They Called Vidalia Onions?

Vidalia onions are named after the town they are grown in, Vidalia Georgia. The sweet flavor is due to the low amount of sulfur in the soil in which they are grown. It can be called a Vidalia only if it is grown in one of 20 counties designated by the Vidalia Onion Act of 1986.

Magnolias

Where Did Magnolia Trees Originate?

Magnolia Trees originated in Southeast Asia and North America but are popular across the world due to their beauty.

Why Are Magnolias “A Southern Thing” If They Grow Across the USA and the World?

Because southern magnolia trees are extremely large in size, they became an iconic southern tree. They are known for their exceptionally large glossy green leaves and their even larger white flowers. They have a sweet lemon smell that radiates in a southern breeze. It is delightful!

Why Are Southern Women Called Steel Magnolias?

Known as the funniest movie that will ever make you cry, Steel Magnolias didn’t coin this common description of southern women, but is the perfect example of the essence of southern women. For me personally, it means going through life wide open saying what you mean no matter the situation, and loving everyone around you with all your might. If you are lucky, you have four or five like minded women right beside you just like the movie. If you haven’t seen the movie, fix yourself a glass of sweet iced tea and watch it. It definitely is one of my top favorite movies of all time and you will laugh and you will cry. Of course anything Dolly Parton is in is great. Speaking of Dolly, if you are ever in Nashville, make sure to visit Dolly’s White Limozeen Rooftop Bar.

Beth and Lanie from A Steel Magnolias podcast said it best in an interview with Your Williamson, “It exemplifies both “traditional femininity, as well as an uncommon fortitude.” It is that unique combination of strong-willed fervor, mixed with grace and charm that make them one of a kind.”

I love that! I would say this is true of women around the world! Magnolias do grow most everywhere. STEEL MAGNOLIAS!

Fun Fact. Did You Know You Can Eat Magnolia Blossoms?

You can! They have a mild ginger flavor. They can be eaten raw in a salad or pickled. If you ever get the chance to try them. Be sure to take a bite.

FRESH MAGNOLIAS

If you have the luxury of fresh magnolia blossoms at your fingertips you are lucky.

How To Prepare The Blooms

  1. Cut the blooms from the tree in the early morning at 12 to 15 inches from the base of the blossom. Be careful not to bruise the petals.
  2. Gently rinse the the blossoms under cool water letting the water wash away all of the loose floral debris.
  3. Look carefully at the branch. Remove the leaves necessary for your bloom to lay flat. Set the leaves aside for place cards. (See Below.)
  4. Place the stems in flower tubes filled with water.

I used only four magnolia blooms for this tablescape.

For the placecards I simply painted the guest names on a magnolia leaf. I recommend doing this only one day before as the paint bleeds into the leaf after a few days.

Cinco De Mayo! DIY Crepe Paper Flowers

When I was a little girl, every summer we took a day trip to an amusement park called 6 Flags Over Georgia. One summer, to my amazement (Insert the dramatic music here.) I spotted the most beautiful sea of large paper flowers. …Every color in the rainbow! My mother had given me a twenty-dollar allowance for the day and my dream of cotton candy on a stick and a frozen lemonade faded fast. I took a flower home. SMILING!

Cinco De Mayo is around the corner, and these are the perfect decor. You can use them on a tablescape, hang them from trees or perhaps even a chandelier. Grab your scissors and a pack of colorful crepe paper from the local craft store and let me show you how easy these are to make.

…and for a lot less than the twenty dollars I handed over on that hot Georgia summer day.

A Few Sparkle Notes Before You start:

  1. Eucalyptus is considered greenery. It can be found in most grocery stores year round. I pick it up at Trader Joe’s for 3.99 a bunch. I purchased everything fresh in this DIY at Trader Joe’s for less than $15.00. Also note, check the ends of the registers at Trader Joe’s before you pick your flowers. They most everyday have buckets of flowers and greenery that are free. They give one bunch to each guest at checkout.
  2. Eucalyptus smells wonderful and is perfect for drying and adding to dried arrangements. It also a great addition to wreaths and oh so pretty tucked in a napkin ring for a little something special in a place setting.
  3. Pick you pop of color roses to match your place settings. I chose orange to pull the color from my swan plates.
  4. If you are decorating your table more than 3 hours before your meal, place the trimmed princess roses in a small bowl filled with room temperature water. Tuck them in just before your guests arrive.
  5. If your grocery store does not carry princess roses, colorful longstems will work just fine.
  6. Please read this DIY through to the end before you start.
  7. There are so many plates to choose from for an autumn table. I am a fan of Home Goods for inexpensive seasonal place setting pieces. I got the swan plates here.

Supplies

  • 18″ X 18″ or larger cloth dinner napkins. I used these.

How To Video

  1. Press the square cloth napkin to remove all creases.
  2. Lay the square in front of you.
  3. Fold the cloth napkin diagonally. The result is a triangle.
  4. Roll the napkin from the crease towards the points. Stop leaving a 5 inch point.
  5. Flip the napkin over.
  6. Roll the folded end from left to right. Stop the roll leaving 4 inches.
  7. Tuck the 4″ tail into the crease of the roll. Using a knife helps a tight tuck.

A Fresh Bouquet Tip For YOU!

Don’t you just love a fresh bouquet of flowers?

I sure do!

Today I want to share one of my favorite things to add to flowers…

FRESH SPRIGS OF MINT!

Grab a bunch flowers and scroll on down for the “How To.”

Be sure to check out how I used fresh mint in bouquet for a cake…..

A Fresh Bouquet Lemon Bundt Cake

A Fresh Bouquet Tip To Add A Fresh & Unique Touch To Your Favorite Flowers

What You Need

  • 1 bunch of your favorite flowers

I chose hydrangeas, ranunculus, and roses as a is brunch centerpiece bouquet which I used as an entry table bouquet after.

Yay for a duel bouquet! Double Yay for what happens when the smell of fresh roses and fresh mint meet. Delightful!

  • 9 to 12 6″ – 8 ” hearty sprigs of fresh mint (This will vary with different bouquet sizes.)

You can get fresh mint in most any grocery store. I have several varieties planted in my flower beds and individual pots. If you have never planted mint, pick a spot It takes over quickly and can survive winters when cut back and covered. flower frog

I usually grab a few free packs of flower food when I buy flowers and keep them on hand. Florists are always happy to share extras.

Here’s How

  1. Fill the vase 3/4 full with water and place the flower arranger on top of the vase. If you don’t have a flower arranger, use floral tape to create a grid over the rim of your vase.
  2. Trim your flowers using the flower sheers to fit the vase.
  3. Starting in the center of the , randomly add your flowers to the water.
  4. In groups of three sprigs, carefully work the mint between flowers so that the tips of the stems touch the water. If the fresh flowers didn’t cause the water to rise, add just a touch for your mint.

A Pretty Peach Arrangement

A Pretty Peachy Peach Flower Arrangement

Have you ever considered adding adding a little fruit to a bouquet or an arrangement!

Well friends! Let me tell you how the Sparkle Lightning struck!

Shopping at the Old Town Alexandria Saturday Farmers Market a few weekends ago I picked up this bouquet of flowers from a kind fellow named Dan. His wife puts seasonal bouquets together weekly and he brings them to market. I always look forward to his friendly greeting as he proudly wraps his sweethearts lovely creations.

Back to my story…

After shopping, I sat down to people watch and enjoy a cool watermelon tea with my own sweetheart. In the midst of this Saturday morning bliss the cutest little boy was rolling a gigantic peach like a ball across a wooden gazebo floor adjacent to me. The peach rolled right up beside me as if it were running to hide in my bouquet and demanding it was not a ball but a beautiful peach that simply wanted to hang with its flower friends.

Supplies

  • 1 bouquet of your favorite flowers
  • vase
  • 3 or 5 firm pretty peaches
  • green flower foam cut to fit glass, 2″ high
  • skewers
  • wire cutters

Sparkle Tip! If you aren’t using a cut or decorative vase and do not want the stems and the flower foam to show in your vase, wrap the bottom with a piece of fabric and tie with a bow, or grab your glue gun and rope and wrap the vase gluing as you go (as seen in above photo.) You could also try this fun Sparkling Charm Personalized Vase.

Instructions

1. Place the green flower foam in the bottom of the vase and fill 3/4 full with cool water.

Sparkle Tip! Use slightly warm if you are using hydrangeas in your arrangement. Cold water causes hydrangeas to droop.

2. Clip the stems of the flowers to a desired length at a 45° angle and arrange them in the water.

Note: When cutting your flowers, keep in mind that they don’t need to pierce the green flower foam.

3. Cut the dull end of the wooden skewers to a desired length and stick them into the firm peaches.

4. Carefully place the skewered peaches into the arrangement  puncturing the green flower foam to hold into place.

Easy Peasy! Now pour yourself a cup of tea, sit back and gaze at your masterpiece.

Tulip Tips

Nothing freshens a home up for springtime like a lovely bouquet of tulips.

Today I am sharing a few tips to arrange your tulips and keep their colorful buds happy longer while they adorn your home.

Tulip Tips

Tulip Tips

1. Give the vase you choose a good wash and dry.

2. Fill the vase less than half full with fresh room temperature water. Tulips last longer in shallow water.

3. Tulips need nourishment. Add a cut flower food packet to the water or make your own by mixing 1 teaspoon of sugar and two drops liquid bleach per gallon of fresh water.

4. Carefully rinse each tulip stem with cool water to remove any dirt that may be trapped in the leaves.

5. To size the tulips for the vase, hold each stem next to your vase to gauge how much you’ll need to trim. (I like to leave six to eight inches above the vase.) Using sharp scissors, cut stems at a 45-degree angle all the same lengthBe sure to cut away the white stem tissue for better absorption. Remove any leaves that will fall under the water line to prevent rotting.

Now for the best part!

You don’t have to arrange tulips!

6. Stand the trimmed tulips up holding them in a bunch and slide them directly into the vase.

That is it! No fussing with heights and floral tape.

I personally think part of the beauty of tulips is how they fall and drape the vase. Day three is as lovely as day one.

Chaotic beauty.

Tulip Tips

…If you want to prevent the droop for a bit longer

8.  Insert a pin through the stem just below the head and pull it out clean. The hole will let air escape to expedite the water flow.

9. Place tulips in a cool area in your home.

10. Replace the water and re-nourish tulips daily.

Tulip Tips

How do you arrange flowers? Do you have tips! Please share in the comments below.

Sparkle Notes…

A nosegay is a small bouquet of sweet smelling flowers. I suppose the name came about because it makes the nose happy.

            Ingredients

            2/3 cup white sugar
            1 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon “clear” vanilla  extract (optional)
            edible flowers
            lollipop sticks
            hard candy mold
clean pastry brush & a small bowl of water

            Instructions

SPARKLE TIP! Caramelized sugar waits for no one! Avoid skipping the following directions.

Fill a large bowl with ice and water. Set aside. Add an edible flower or petals and a lollipop stick to each of the hard candy molds.

Add the sugar, clear vanilla, and the corn syrup to a small saucepan set over medium heat. Attach the candy thermometer to the interior of the saucepan. Increase the heat to medium-high to bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Using the small pastry brush dipped in water, brush the sides of the saucepan to prevent crystals from forming. Boil the mixture for 5 to 8 minutes until it reaches 300ºF (hard-crack stage) on the candy thermometer.

When the mixture reaches 300ºF (hard-crack stage), immediately dip the base of the saucepan into the bowl of ice water. Avoid letting water seep into the pan. Carefully swirl the pan for 3 seconds.

Working quickly, pour the syrup into the hard candy lollipop molds.

Cool and let dry completely. Remove the lollipops from the molds and package them.

            DIY Plant Mugs

            Supplies

            white coffee mug
            decal paper
            scissors
            turpentine
            water-based polyurethane
            foam craft brushes
            inkjet printer

            Directions

            1. Choose a photo and size it to fit the white cup when cut out. A close up face shot will work best.

            2. Using an inkjet printer, print the image onto the transparent side of the waterslide paper.

Consider printing the photos tall enough to touch the top edge of the cup so that the plant looks like hair.

            3. Trim the image to fit the mug.

            4. Using a foam brush, paint a thin layer of turpentine onto the white mug. Set aside

            5. Submerge the photograph into warm water for 30 seconds.

            6. Gently slide the transparent photograph away from the white decal paper backing. Immediately place the transparent image on top to the turpentine painted mug.

            7. Avoid touching the photo once you slide it into place. Allow the ring dish to dry completely.

            8. Coat with a layer of clear paint.

How cute are these?! Big blooms are everywhere in fashion this spring. Why not wear them on your ears too? It only takes about 5 minutes to make a pair so you must make a few extra for your friends.

            Sparkle! Sparkle! XX-Gwyn

Oh yes! Check out these cute Sparkling Charm Pom Pom Bracelets too!

EASY DIY! Gold Flower Power Earrings

            Supplies

            20 gauge gold wire
            needle nose jewelry pliers
            earring
            ear wire shepherds with ball
            rubber earring backs

            Instructions

Note: When forming the petals, “about” the same size is PERFECTION! They are super cute a little uneven.

            1.  Cut a piece of wire.

Note: Wire lengths vary depending on finished flower size. I cut just at 14 inches for an 1 1/2 flower.

            2. Starting at either end of the wire, create the first petal by forming a loop and bringing the short end of the wire over, under, and back over the long end of the wire.

            3. Using the pliers, bend the tip of the wire straight up.

            4. Continue with the long end of the wire to create a figure eight. Bring the long end under and back over the center of the first just beside the wire sticking straight up.

            5. Form another petal by making another loop and bringing the long end of the wire under and around the center of the figure eight. Repeat on the opposite side to form a 4th petal ending by wrapping the long wire around the center.

            6. Using the same wrapping method, create the 5th and 6th petal ending with the two wires sticking straight up.

            7. Tuck the two pointed wires down into the center of the flower with the point of the needle nose jewelry pliers.

            8. Smash the center of the flower down using the flattened part of the needle nose pliers.

            9. Use your fingers to fan out the petals a little.

            10. Slip the earring shephard hooks onto to flowers and squeeze the ball into place.

EASY DIY! Personalized Photo Flower Vases Instructions

Note: The photo inside the vase on Sparkling Charm was taken after 48 hours of being submerged. I wanted the peony’s to open for the photo. SMILE! The photo of my mother was printed with an inkjet printer at home. If your photo is printed professionally with a laser printer, you can skip the contact paper step below and stick it directly into the water. However, your photo will not last as long and begin to curl a bit after being submerged.

            1. Fill a vase with water and a bouquet of flowers.
            2. Cover the photo with clear contact paper on both sides and trim.
            3. Press out any air bubbles.
            4. Slide the photo into the front of the vase.

THERE YOU HAVE IT! THIS IS A SURELY A SPECIAL WAY TO SHOWCASE SOMEONE YOU LOVE!
