A Story of Friendship About Vintage Jewelry

As an Army wife I am blessed with a multitude of beautiful ladies I call my Army Sisters. Each time I move I always find myself blessed beyond measure with these treasured friendships. Today I would like to share a little story about my Army sister Stephanie and how this vintage jewelry shadowbox gift for her came to be.

I first met Stephanie in 2013 during our first tour at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington at a neighborhood gathering called Cups and Pups.

…An early morning ritual at whim!
…PNW Rain or Shine, RAIN most likely!
…Come in your PJ’s or dressed for the day!
…Bring a Pup and a Cup!
…Girlfriends around a fire pit laughing and chatting required!
…Hosted and founded by another Army sister and sensational sparkler, the lovely Carla!

If you are lucky enough to know Stephanie, you know you need body armor and a firehose to douse her in coffee if you plan to wake her or plan to be in her presence before 0900. Well, no one warned me of this upon our first meeting.

I sat right down beside her….

“Hi! My name is Gwyn.” …and went in for the big hug. I am not sure she knew what to make of the “ENTHUSIASTIC! WIDE AWAKE AT DAWN! LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED SOUTHERN-NESS.”

Stephanie gave me the once-over and I think I heard a little growl.

THEN the most fantastic laugh erupted from this tiny little body under a head of pretty blond hair!

When I heard that laugh, I knew we were going to get along just fine and dandy. Still to this day, I remind her that she is always just one big hug away from my southern-ness which compliments her northern-ness. perfectly in my opinion.

…Especially on days when I scoop her up before 0900 for random adventures like a drop in at Trader Joe’s for goodies to have a morning picnic on the Puget Sound.

Fast Forward Four Years

We left JBLM and moved to Carlisle, PA for my husband to attend War College. When we got the message that we were heading back to JBLM, I immediately contacted the friends I would soon re-join. Of course Stephanie was at the top of the list! Hailing from the state of Pennsylvania, she asked me if I would be willing to add a family heirloom to our household goods to be shipped.  I without hesitation said yes. Her dear father delivered a beautiful jewelry chest that belonged to her mother along with the surprise of five shoeboxes full of vintage jewelry, several bags of Middlesworth Potato Chips (a PA favorite), and Yuengling.

Our shipment was delivered in tact and I could hardly wait to give Stephanie her mother’s jewelry chest and the added surprise of the five boxes of treasure. She was thrilled indeed.

After we were all settled in, Stephanie came down (…four houses down to be exact. SMILE!) to resume our backyard fire pit tradition. She was loaded down with the boxes of jewelry. We sat out back with another friend and went through each box as she shared memories of special pieces. She took what she wanted and then handed over the rest. “Take what you want and get rid of the rest.”  WHAAAAT?! My heart! She was sharing her precious treasure. I turned some of the pieces into this Vintage Jewelry Shadow Box for her, of course kept the sparkly and pearl pieces to style with my own wardrobe, and with her permission, gave the rest to our military community thrift shop.

My Gwynian Webster Definition of My Friend Stephanie

Stephanie: [Ste-phan-eee] dear friend, army sister, origin, Pennsylvania
1. loyal, kind, heart of gold, sparkler
2. best laugh extremely northwest of the Chatahoochee River
3. a friendship I will treasure for life

Yes, one of the best parts of being an Army wife are the friends you make along the way. Always sad when paths part, but BOY OH BOY, the PURE SPARKLING CHARM AND JOY that comes when paths cross again is just priceless.

If you are interested in making a Vintage Jewelry Shadow Box for yourself or for a gift, I found a photo inspiration for this project on Pinterest at this link: DIY’s.com. Below are the Sparkling Charm directions on how I emulated  this project.

DIY Jelly Bean Bracelet

A Personal Candy Jewelry Necklace Memory

Do you remember candy bracelets and necklaces? I sure do. They will be burned into my brain forever. When I was a little girl my mother dressed me in a lovely ensemble for school photos. Just prior, I decided to style myself a bit further for the photo shoot with a partly eaten lovely candy necklace. What I didn’t anticipate was my mothers fury when the photos came in. Let me just leave it at that. SMILE!

The other day I spotted a pack of extra large candy bracelets at Nordstrom and giggled my head off at the “not so much fun at the time” memory.

Mama, if you are reading this, NORDSTROM CONSIDERS CANDY JEWELRY A FASHION PIECE! I knew I was on to something special!

Today I am returning to my childhood “stylist” occupation. I have crafted my own version of the candy bracelet using retro jelly beans! I am wearing this fun statement piece with a pair of  jeans and a blouse for a casual Easter party this weekend.

PS Do you have a “not so fun but funny” childhood fashion statement memory? Please share in the comments!

Gold Leaf Easter Eggs

Personal Reasons I Love Easter and the Golden Egg!

When I was little girl I could hardly wait for any holiday to arrive and Easter was no exception! Before I get to the DIY I want to share a few of my favorite memories.

Easter Fashion! I am talking head to toe beauty, friends!

  • My mama wrapped my head tight with pink sponge curlers to create ringlet curls all over my head. Even though it hurt a little to sleep in those things, this to me was OH SO SPECIAL because there was nothing better than a spritz of White Rain hair spray for extra hold at the end. I learned that beauty comes with a price at an early age.
  • It was the one day of the year I got to wear a tiny lace bra with a fancy dress, lacy socks, and patten white leather shoes.
  • Mama painted my nails with clear polish. I loved the shine.
  • I got to wear light pink lip gloss, a little swipe of pink blush on my cheeks, and a dab of Charlie perfume on my wrists. Faint!

Easter Events!

  • Sunrise Service and the happiest music my ears have ever heard.
  • The search for an Easter basket full of fun treats left by the Easter Bunny. PS Still to this day I would take the coloring books, markers, and crayons over the candy any day of the week.
  • Eating colorful jelly beans in Sunday School before lunch!
  • Easter Dinner with family and friends.
  • The Bunny Hop Dance.
  • Dying Easter Eggs!  My mama didn’t just opt for the PAAS egg dying kit, she pulled out the Elmer’s glue and the sparkles to make them extra special. I will never forget the egg she covered in sequins. I wanted to keep it forever.

My mother always made everything extra special with added touches. Adding sequins to a dyed egg is only one of the bazillion things she did to make life Sparkle with Charm. My mother has taught me that little things really do mean everything.

I wonder if this explains my need to tie matching sheet sets together with large colorful bows in our linen closet?

#RIBBONMAKESLIFEPRETTY or #SENDHELPNOWLOL

AND LASTLY…

  • THE EASTER EGG HUNT AND THE SEARCH FOR THE GOLDEN PRIZE EGG STUFFED WITH A FIVE DOLLAR BILL!

Which brings me to today’s DIY, Fancy Golden Easter Eggs. They aren’t just perfect for the prize egg in an egg hunt. They are beautiful to use for Easter decor.

PS Easter is still one of my favorite celebrations. What are some of your favorite memories and traditions? Please share in the comments.

What Makes The Best Colors For Natural Egg Dyes

Right this minute your kitchen is filled with natural dyes. Red Cabbage! Turmeric! Blackberries! Coffee! Tea! Beets!

IF IT STAINS A CUTTING BOARD OR YOUR FINGERS IT WILL COLOR AN EGG FRIENDS!

A Fun Note About Natural Dyed Easter Eggs

  • I am sharing the recipes for the natural dying agents I used, but the fun comes with the mystery of the result. Perhaps try, chili powder, raspberries, grape juice, purple cabbage, or spinach?!?!?! Maybe consider dipping an egg in two colors! For even more amusement, create new names for the colors you achieve.

Be sure and share your results and what you used in the comment section below. Be sure to also use #MySparkleSpin #SparklingCharmEverything and Tag me @_SparklingCharm.

Natural Dyed Easter Egg Directions

Cover eggs with water and bring to a rolling boil. Cover with a lid and remove from heat. Let them set for 10 minutes. Drain the water. Pat each egg dry.

Add a dying agent (see amounts I used below), 1 quart water, and 2 tablespoons white vinegar to a pot.

Note: If you add more water to cover ingredients, add more vinegar. The rule is 2 tablespoons of vinegar per 1 quart of water. Adjust accordingly. Place a natural dying agent in the pot using the amount listed below.

  • Beet dye: 2 medium purple beets,  chopped
  • Kale dye: 4 cups kale, chopped
  • Blackberry Dye: 1 cup blackberries, mashed
  • Coffee Dye: 1 quart strong black coffee, instead of water
  • Matcha Tea Dye: 6 tablespoons matcha tea per 1 quart water
  • Turmeric Dye: 5 tablespoons turmeric per 1 quart water

2. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-low. Allow the ingredients to simmer for 30 minutes.

Strain dye into a bowl.

Using a metal spoon, lower cooled hard-boiled eggs into a bowl of cooled dye, and let them soak for as little as 5 seconds or as long as overnight, depending on the depth of color you desire.

Remove eggs with spoon and pat dry with a white paper towels.

Dry on a wire rack.

Optional: Shine using a small drop of olive oil on a towel or spray paint them with a coat of polyurethane.

Natural Dyed Easter Egg Tips

  • If you are planning to eat the eggs and are using fresh eggs from a farmer vs. store-bought eggs, be sure to let them rest in the refrigerator for one week. They must have time to develop an air pocket inside, otherwise, they will be impossible to peel.
  • Natural Dyed Eggs, must be stored in the refrigerator within and hour and be eaten within a week.
  • If you are using these for Easter decor, dispose of them when the holiday is over. They are perfect for a compost bin.
  • This is my sure-fire easy peel tip.  Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per 1 quart of water. Bring to a rolling boil, cover and remove from the heat. Let the eggs stand for exactly 10 minutes. Drain the eggs and peel under cold water. They peels will come off easily in large pieces.
  • Eggs must be stored in the refrigerator within and hour and be eaten within a week.
  • If you are using your Natural Dyed Eggs for Easter decor, dispose of them when the holiday is over. They are perfect for a compost bin.

My husband and I were married in Charleston, SC. We enjoyed a wonderful reception and stay at lovely The Charleston Place Hotel, located just at the end of the famous Charleston City Market in the heart of downtown. The market is also famous for beautiful handmade sweetgrass baskets. Watching ladies sit and make them onsite, I became interested in this art and stumbled onto a video twisting tree bark into rope. Today I am sharing how I use the same method using fabric scraps.

Supplies

  • 1 inch fabric strips

Instructions

Start Fabric Gift Twine

Tie 2 strips of fabric together using a double knot. PULL IT TIGHT!

The Twine Twist

Hold the tied strips with one hand tightly between the thumb and the forefinger over the tied knot.

Use the other hand pick up the top fabric strand. Wrap the strip of fabric away from you around your middle or forefinger two times.

Grip the twist tightly.

Pull the twisted fabric toward you and pull down.

Move the thumb and forefinger away from knot to hold the twist. Bring the bottom piece of fabric to the top. Repeat the process until one or both of the fabric twist strip/s only has two inches left.

Note: The tighter you twist the stronger the twine will be. I like using different amounts of pressure on the twist to create more character in the twine.

Joining Strands

When one or both of the fabric strips has only two inches of untwisted fabric left, fold in a new piece/s and continue twisting. Repeat to desired length. When you are finished, simply tie a loose knot at the end.

Option: If you want a more rustic look; tie on the pieces versus folding them in. This adds little knot tails along the twine.

Tidy Up

Snip any unwanted freys and tidy up the knot-tails if you tied on.

Finish

When you reach the desired length, tie the two ends together and clip off the ends.

How To Store Fabric Gift Twine

  1. Wrap your twine around large spools and use them for decor on a bookshelf or kitchen window.
  2. Roll the twine into a ball and lay it in a bowl in your kitchen. I keep a small ball in my fruit bowl. It adds a little color and is handy for sharing goodies.

The History of The Gum Drop

Gumdrops first appeared in the 19th century as early as 1801 and referred to as small sweets. In 1859 the name gumdrop was put into print in an advertisement in the Illinois State Chronicles for a candy shop owned by George Julier. They have stood the test of time and are still today a popular treat during the holidays on gingerbread houses.

How Do Gumdrops Taste?

Each gumdrop color has a different flavor and sometimes two. Purple gumdrops are usually grape or peppermint, while white could be licorice or clove. Black are always licorice and orange is sometimes anise or orange. Yellow is lemon or allspice and green is mint or apple.

What are Gumdrops Made of?

Gumdrops are brightly colored gummy candy made from gelatin or pectin and dusted with a light coating of sugar.

How To Decorate with Gumdrop Trees

Gumdrop trees add charm to your holiday decor. Below are five places to use them in your home.

  1. Fireplace Hearth
  2. Buffet
  3. Centerpiece
  4. Window Seal
  5. Bedroom Dresser

Instructions

Break toothpicks into halves.

Starting at the point of the styrofoam tree working around the tree, insert a toothpick, add a drop of hot glue at the base of the toothpick, slide on a gumdrop gently pressing into the glue.

Repeat working to the bottom of the tree.

Have Fun!

How Do You Store Vintage Gumdrop Trees For Next year?

I have great news! You can keep gumdrop trees for at least 12 years. I am on twelve and counting. Let me add that we have had 12 military moves and they have been moved six times now and endured different temperatures crossing the country.

  1. Wrap the trees in three layers of acid free white tissue paper.
  2. Wrap them in a double layer of bubble wrap and secure with a piece of masking tape.
  3. Store them in a plastic container with an airtight lid.

Witch Trivia

Why do people dress up as witches for Halloween?

Legend has it that the day before Halloween, fairy and mean spirits would appear as spirits made their journey to the afterlife. Celts dressed up in costumes to ward off the mean spirits so their ancestors could pass easily.

What Does A Witch Wear?

Witches attire can be super spooky or fun spooky. Throughout history, the depiction of the witch has taken on many forms, but the essence of their attire has always been a woman in black wearing a pointy hat and shoes with a broom to fly on.

How To Make Witch Costume Shoes

What are witch shoes called?

Witch shoes have many names. Here are a few; Cromwells, Molieres, The Sally Sandal, Soulier Italie, Colonials, Bar Shoes, Barrette Shoes, Whoopie Booties, and Tango Boots.

Witch Shoe Notes

I am calling my take on these HGTV DIY Witch Shoes…. “Witchy Boo Boo-tin’s” How cute are these? My friend Stephanie put the link for these on my Facebook Page.  We decided quickly that these were a “must make” to pass out candy in our neighborhood. BOY WERE THEY A HIT!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE WITCH SHOES

SUPPLIES

The photo below shows the items you will need to create the Sparkling Charm version. I picked the shoes up at a local thrift shop for $2.00 and the other supplies at a local craft store. I have also added a few fun photos from the evening.

You’ve Been Boozed!

Have you ever been BOOED in the month of October? Someone rings the doorbell, leaves a bag of fun sweet treats along with printables to play the game forward, then disappears into the night before you answer?

It is so much fun! ….

I have fancied up the game a little by changing the instructional poem and using pretty Ava in a witch hat for the game free printables. I want to share them with YOU!

Scroll on down and let’s get the spooky party started!

PS We can’t forget the children! Here is a “You’ve Been Boo’d Family Friendly Version”  from  Christy at ‘The Girl Who Ate Everything” blog

MORE HALLOWEEN HERE!

YOU’VE BEEN BOOZED!

How Does You’ve Been Boozed | Booed Work?

Someone somewhere had the bright idea to kick this October Halloween game up a notch creating a version for grown-ups.

Just like being Booed, a neighbor or friend anonymously leaves a treat on your doorstep. The only difference, switching the sweets and halloween toys for a six pack, a bottle of wine, or liquor with other fun things (ideas below), plus the “You’ve Been Boozed Game Sheets” (free printables below.) The receiver has two days to BOOZE someone else under the cover of darkness.

Who Do I Booze? How Do I Choose?

Neighbors

Neighborhoods are where the classic game began. It is super fun to watch it grow and spread to others.

Friends

Friends are fun to play the game with because you don’t always live in the same neighborhood. Certainly, this spreads the fun in tons of neighborhoods.

Family

Why not pick a family member to booze? This requires another level of stealth maneuvers to keep your boozer status under wraps.

Co-Workers

Co-Workers? Why not! How about picking a couple of people you would like to know better.

How Many People | Neighbors | Friends | Co-Workers Do I Booze?

The game calls to play it forward to two people. I recommend picking someone you know and someone you don’t. As a result, you could make a new friend.

If you are like me, I like to get the party started by making 10 plus bags and do an even split of people I know and people I do not. Sometimes leaving at least two bags in a close by neighborhood is fun too.

When Do You Start the “You’ve Been Booed” | “You’ve Been Boozed” Game?

The first day of October is the perfect day to get the game started. Accordingly. this gives plenty of time to get the game underway and more people get to be a part of the fun.

When Does the “You’ve Been Boozed” | “You’ve Been Booed” game end?

October 31st is the last night for the game.

It is fun to be the first to Booze people in your neighborhood and watch it multiply. My husband and I drive around and count the doors with the Sparkling Charm Boozed sheets on the front doors in our neighborhood.

Gift Basket | Bag Ideas For You’ve Been Boozed

Start shopping for the game at the first sight of Halloween items in stores. A favorite place to find unique goodies is Homegoods, Hobby Lobby, and Trader Joe’s.

  • Wine with spooky Halloween labels
  • All of the ingredients for a single cocktail (Martini Glass | Pop Rocks [to rim the glass] | Vodka Mini Bottle | Sprite | Cocktail Napkins)
  • Cocktail or Wine Glasses (I always find glasses with witches at Walmart or TJ Max.)
  • Bottle opener
  • Drink Charms
  • Ice Cube Molds
  • Chocolates that pair with the alcohol you choose
  • Cocktail Napkins
  • A cute witch hat or headband
  • A Halloween Movie

How do You Play You’ve Been Boozed?

PICK YOUR PEOPLE

Whether boozing the required two or ten+ like me, consider an even split between people you know and people you would like to know better.

GATHER THE GOODIES

It is time to shop! As shown above, check out the list of ideas above for ideas.

PRINT THE GAME SHEETS

PRINT ONE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING FOR THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE YOU PLAN TO BOOZE.

Free Printable #2: “I’VE BEEN BOOZED” DOOR SIGN

You have two choices for this printable.

This printable does not go inside the bag | basket.

Take a roll of scotch tape or glue dots with you.

Equally important, place this printable on the door visible for neighbors to see. Moreover, to prevent double boozing and to spread the fun to more people.

Furthermore, BE SNEAKY!

TIME TO GET SNEAKY!

PUT THE YOU’VE BEEN BOOZED BASKETS TOGETHER

Arrange the goodies in a bag or a basket along with the free printables in place.

DELIVER THE YOU’VE BEEN BOOZED BASKETS

Lastly, the fun part! Under the cover of darkness, deliver the baskets! During your heart pounding mission, be sure to place the “I’ve Been Boozed” sign on the door, ring the doorbell and RUN like the wind! Finally, lay low and watch the boozed answer the door. Undoubtedly it will make you smile!

Watch out for the door cameras. Coming in sideways in a hat and glasses low crawling might do the trick. However, it could also end up viral on TikTok.

BE SURE TO HAVE FUN, OKAY!

Cinco De Mayo! DIY Crepe Paper Flowers

When I was a little girl, every summer we took a day trip to an amusement park called 6 Flags Over Georgia. One summer, to my amazement (Insert the dramatic music here.) I spotted the most beautiful sea of large paper flowers. …Every color in the rainbow! My mother had given me a twenty-dollar allowance for the day and my dream of cotton candy on a stick and a frozen lemonade faded fast. I took a flower home. SMILING!

Cinco De Mayo is around the corner, and these are the perfect decor. You can use them on a tablescape, hang them from trees or perhaps even a chandelier. Grab your scissors and a pack of colorful crepe paper from the local craft store and let me show you how easy these are to make.

…and for a lot less than the twenty dollars I handed over on that hot Georgia summer day.

Basic Supplies For The Fancy Fall Garland and The Halloween Glam Garland

scissors/for wire

cutter bee scissors My favorite scissors for ribbon and yarn!!!

chicken wire

command hooks

glue dots

For the Pom Poms

3 or 4 skeins of yarn (Pick different textures in your favorite fall colors.)

Absolutely have fun picking out your colors! SMILE! Softer creamier colors were my choice this year. I chose a chunky thick soft lavender, a gold foil/cream, and a super soft off white yarn. I just can’t get enough of lavender right now so I am adding a tiny touch to my fall decor. PS I picked all of these up at Hobby Lobby. Here are a few links to a few pretty yarns on Amazon…this chunky cream, this pretty metallic gold, this lavender and white eyelash yarn, this soft blend called whipped cream, and this pretty tan.

Pom Pom Maker

Cardboard, scissors, and yarn work wonderfully for making pom poms, but I am a sucker for little craft gadgets. I used this one to make pom poms for this project, it also can be used to make tassels.

This pom pom maker looks fun too.

Sparkle Tips: If you have a local Hobby Lobby, use the weekly 40% off coupon for the pom pom maker and watch the online ad for yarn to go on sale. I found these 18 Hacks to Get the Most out of Hobby Lobby Sales and Coupons from The Spruce Crafts.

Other Fun Textures

Have fun picking your faves!

wooden beads (pre-strung)

burlap ribbon (I used this one. This is pretty too!)

fall flowers (I found the flak wood flowers at the local craft store. They carry them at Trader Joe’s in the fall.)

wheat, cat tails, natural cotton flowers

I used a faux wheat pick from Hobby Lobby.

This pretty garland DIY is perfect for a fireplace mantel, draping the frame of an entryway, swagged on a decorative ladder, or perfectly placed on a table as a centerpiece.

2. Hang the wooden beads (+/-yarn/rope other textures) on the command hooks.

3. Cut the chicken wire to fit the preferred garland length. Flatten and place along the garland area. Add more command hooks to secure the wire into place.

4. Pull the burlap ribbon through the wire and fluff working randomly across the chicken wire. (Photo Below.)

Tip: As you are working across the wire, let the ribbon drape off the chicken wire here and there. (Photo below.)

Fun for all ages all year round!

Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Color Cubes are little bits of colored joy for you, your family, and all who get to view it!

This year my resolution was to find a way to Spread Sparkle with random acts of kindness at minimum once a week.

We have a walking trail behind our home. Inspired by all of the beautiful side walk art for photographs on social media, I decided to whip up a batch of chalk for my neighborhood.

I started the fun with a Hop Scotch Board ending with a pile of chalk for passers by to have a little fun too.

This easy recipe only needs a few ingredients!

“Hello Shoes! I have not seen you in awhile! You have been hiding in boxes. You would have been so cute with the skirt I wore a week ago!”

Do you find you have shoes you never wear because you can’t see them?

Do you find yourself only wearing comfy flats?

Are your shoes hiding in a big mess of mix-matched whacky-stacked boxes? (I think I just made up a word. ?)

…No Space to store them?

As an Army wife living in a different home every few years, I have been forced to get SUPER CREATIVE with different spaces. Sometimes VERY LITTLE!

Today I am sharing my original shoe solution with YOU!

Get those pretty shoes out of boxes and on your feet!

DIY: Shoe Organization “A Simple Shoe Solution for Heels”

Supplies

Get out your measuring tape before you head to the hardware store ?⚒. You will need to do a bit of pre-planning in accordance to the space and wall type you are using for this diy. Please read the directions below for pre-planning.

1/2″ X  2″ X 8′ board/s (painted in desired color and cut to fit your space)

Note: You can purchase pre-painted white boards. They need to be at least 1/2″ in thickness to hold your shoes.

1 1/2″ wood screws with matching anchors (You will need 1 screw and 1 anchor for every 2 feet  of the number of boards your are using.)

Please Note: The most important factor in screw selection is depth for the surface where you are planning to hang your shoes. The general rule of thumb is that the screw should enter at least half the thickness of the bottom material, e.g. 3/4″ into a 2 x 4.

If you are choosing a different sized board and have no idea which screw to pick, Bob Vila can help! Click here

drill

drill bits (Basic sizes come in this kit.)

level

measuring tape

paint (Optional if you purchase pre-painted boards.)

paint brush (Optional if you purchase pre-painted boards.)

note pad

pencil

sand paper (Optional if the hardware store offers a quick sanding for you.)

saw (Optional if the hardware store offers quick cuts into the length needed for this project.)

Directions for Supplies Needed

1. Count your shoes with heels that you plan to hang. Make a note of the total.

2. Measure the height and the length of the wall you plan to hang your shoes on. Make a note of your measurements.

3. Next determine how many boards you can hang in the space chosen in accordance with the number of shoes you plan to hang. Plan for…

*10 pairs of shoes fit on a 5 1/2′ board.

*1′ of space is needed between each board.

Note the length of each board needed.

Note the number of boards you will need.

4. Determine the depth of the surface you will hang your boards on. Make a note.

5. One screw and one anchor is required for every 2′ of board. Note the number of screws and anchors you will need for each board. Add the total for each board and make a note. See notes above for the size screws you need. The screw size listed above is for a 1/2″ X 2 ” board.

Okay! Let’s Get to Work

*Cut, sand, and paint your boards if you chose these options.

6. Using a tape measure, a level, and a pencil; draw lines along the surface of the wall for level and even board placement. The boards need 1 ‘ of space between them.

7. Make a tiny marks every 2′ on the wall lines you drew for the screws and anchors.

8. Mark your boards in 2’ increments that will line up evenly with the wall marks you made for the screws and anchors.

9. Using a drill bit to match the anchors, drill a hole in each wall mark and press the anchor in.

For Step #10 another ????‍♀ human would be helpful to hold the board into place. BUT ??‍♀ YOU CAN DO IT ALONE! I did. ??

10. Using a drill bit to fit the screw size needed, drill through the holes marked on each board.

11. Place a board on the wall using the lines drawn. Drill the screws through the board into each anchor. Repeat with all of the boards.

Tidy up! Hang your shoes!

I would love to see your shoe wall! Please send me a photo or tag me on instagram and be sure to use #sparklingcharmeverything.

pom pom
fabric fusion tape

tiny hole punch
Sparkling Charm Free Printable Hidden Heart Necklace Template

A Little Something Special for Someone Special DIY: Hidden Message Necklace

Directions

1. Cut out the hearts and the felt pouch templates from Free Printable Hidden Heart Necklace Template. Place the pouch and two heart templates on felt and cut out. Line the pouch template back on top of the felt and use a hole punch in template circles to create two holes. Fold the pouch in half (straight edges) and use the hole punch again inside the two holes you just made. When you unfold you will have 4 holes lined up. (See above photo.) Set aside.

2. Cut a 4 inch piece of thread and tie it around the pom pom. Pull tight! Set aside. (In photo above. Lower left corner.)

3. Using two colors of thread, cut off  a 3 1/2 foot piece from each. Place them beside each other and fold them in half. Tie a knot about 2 inches from one end.

4. Tie a second knot 1 inch away from the first knot and continue to tie knots spaced about 1 inch apart until you reach the other end.

5. Lay the felt pouch in front of you. Cut two tiny pieces of of the fabric adhesive and peel one side of the backing from the tape. Place a piece of the tape in the two corners of the widest end of the felt pouch.

6. Twist the bottom up toward the top and line up holes on one side of felt. Insert the knotted threads through the holes from the back to the front. Tie a knot and pull it secure against felt. Repeat this step with the opposite side.

10. Double knot the pom pom onto one side of the pouch and trim the ends. (Photo below.)

11. Set an iron to high and press firmly for 60 seconds to secure the adhesive.
