3. Add the coconut oil and the remaining petroleum jelly to a microwave safe bowl and melt for 30 seconds until melted. Give it a stir.

4. Mix in the colored paste a “little bit” at a time and STIR! STIR! STIR! until your desired colour is reached.

5. After blended, return to microwave and heat for 10 seconds to re-melt.

A Southern New Year’s Day Tradition: Black Eyed Peas, Collard Greens, & Cornbread

What is the Southern New Year’s Day Black Eyed Peas and Collard Greens Tradition?

A long held tradition in the south for luck and prosperity throughout the year is to eat black eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread on New Year’s Day.

Drain the black-eyed peas, leaving 1 cup of the broth in the pot. Set aside and keep warm.

Collard Greens

In a large saucepan, combine the chicken stock with the jalapeños, diced onion, and a big pinch of salt and pepper. Bring to a boil.

Add the collards in large handfuls, letting each batch wilt slightly before adding more.

Cover and cook over moderate heat for 30 minutes or until the collards are tender.

Collard Greens

Uncover and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the broth is slightly reduced. This will take about 10 minutes.

Discard the discard the jalapeño.

Plate with hot buttered Buttermilk Cornbread. ENJOY!

Southern Buttermilk Cornbread

Preheat oven to 400°F.

In a mixing bowl, add the eggs and beat with a fork until blended. Stir in the buttermilk and the baking soda. Add the cornmeal, flour, and salt and stir until just combined.

Melt the butter in large cast iron skillet. Remove from the heat. Pour the batter into the hot butter and quickly stick the skillet into the hot oven. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Turn the cornbread out onto a plate and serve warm.

New Year’s Eve is almost here. Why not host your own party to usher in the new year with friends and family?  Here are a few cheap and easy tips to throw your own bash in a flash.

Sparkle Note! This article has appeared in in print.

Pop! Clink! Drink! How a Last Minute New Year’s Eve Party

Make a plan. Grab a notebook and a pencil to jot down a guest list, an easy menu, and a few ideas for decor and ambiance. Think about what you already have in your home you can use. Then make a shopping list of what you will need to purchase.

The Invitation. You’re going to need a head count in order to plan accordingly. Facebook Events, Paperless Post, and Evite are three free options for fast responses. Consider a separate text or email to let your guests know they have an invitation awaiting them. This is also an avenue to gently let them know you need a quick response. Try adding this line, “Thank you in advance for a quick response. I have a few fabulous ideas that take planning and I don’t want you to miss out.” I also add it to the bottom of the official invitation.

The Menu. Keep it simple and serve both savory and sweet bite-sized foods. This will give you more time to mingle and everything can be ready to go before your guests arrive. Create a display of these goodies on a countertop where there is plenty of room for easy access. In addition, position plates of these small bites around your home for snacking here and there. Plenty of food adds a touch of splendor to any party.

Pinterest is a wonderful place to get ideas for both savory and sweet food. Visit the Everything New Year’s Eve and Everything Tapas boards on Pinterest at Gwyn_@SparklingCharm.

For drinks, add a unique touch. Create your own cocktail for the celebration and give it a special name. Look in your own cabinets first and see what you already have for your concoction.

If you are interested in a fabulous finale just before the clock strikes midnight, instead of champagne, try this recipe, Champagne Sparkle Shots. Not only are they a show-stopper, they are a mouth-watering treat too.

Decor and Ambiance. Think simple! Place New Year’s Eve tiaras, sparkly hats, 2018 glasses, and noise makers, randomly around your home for people to wear and have fun with throughout the evening. Consider setting up a selfie spot with these fun items too.

Make a party play list and plan the progression of your choices. Start with lively music as guests arrive. Play dance tunes just loud enough to get your guests moving and singing in place while they mingle. Lastly, end the night with soothing music. • 4 ounces vodka (I prefer Tito’s)
  • sparkle star sprinkles or edible gold leaf

star cookie cutter

Instructions

Spray a loaf pan with a mild nonstick cooking spray. Wipe away excess with a paper towel. Set aside.

Next, in a medium saucepan, add the chilled simple syrup and lemon juice. Sprinkle in the gelatin packets and allow them to bloom for 2 minutes. Turn on the heat and whisk until the gelatin is completely dissolved.

Remove the mixture from the heat and stir in the chilled champagne and the vodka. Pour into the prepared loaf pan and place in the refrigerator to fully set.

Flip the Champagne Jello Sparkle Shots onto a parchment paper-lined cutting board and cut into small squares or cut with a star shaped cookie cutter. (See serving ideas above.)

Garnish with the star sprinkles, or with the edible gold leaf.

TIPS! Champagne Jello Sparkle Shots

  • ALCOHOL FREE MOCKTAIL: Make a separate batch for kids and your non-drinking guests so that can join in the fun. Simply substitute the champagne with ginger ale or sparkling cider and the vodka/gin with white grape juice.
  • EDIBLE GOLD LEAf: This is pretty but can be tricky to decorate food with. It stick to fingers! Use a paint brush dedicated to food. Carefully lift the corners of the edible gold leaf with the paint brush and place it where you want it.
  • MAKE AHEAD/STORAGE: If you are making these pre-party, you can store them in the loaf pan for 24 hours prior to the party in an airtight container. Place a piece of plastic wrap on top of the jello before sealing with an airtight lid. Cut them 2 hours prior. Sprinkle just before serving. Jello cannot sit at room temperature.
  • SERVING: As noted above, jello cannot sit at room temperature. These must be served directly from the refrigerator.

Of course this bucket would make a great addition to any celebration. You could add most anything to the ice to match your theme. Fresh holly with red berries and pine for Christmas, or lemons, limes, and oranges for a garden party…ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!

DIY Bubbly Ice Bucket

DIY Bubbly Ice Bucket

Materials

2 buckets, one smaller than the first. (I found mine at a dollar store.)
cup
water
sparkly embellishments (glitter, ornaments, tinsel, sequins, floral picks…)
hand weights

Directions

1. Fill the larger bucket with 2 inches of water and freeze solid. This will create your base.

2. Place the smaller bucket inside the center of the larger bucket placing the hand weights inside the smaller bucket. I recommend going heavier vs. lighter.

3. Carefully slide your sparkly embellishments into the space between the large and smaller buckets. Perfection is not necessary.

Note: If you are concerned with the placement of your embellishments, you may choose to add your items, cover with only a little water at a time and freeze in layers. Adding more embellishments and water until you reach the top of your buckets. I just go for it. …One and done!

I personally love the beauty that can always be found in a sparkly mess.” -gwyn

5. Use the cup to fill the space between the larger and smaller buckets with water, being carful not to displace your sparkly embellishments.

6. To remove your DIY Bubbly Ice Bucket, simply run warm water into the inner bucket then gently twist the inner bucket sliding it out. Next, run warm water over the outside of the outer bucket. Then gently lift out your DIY Bubbly Ice Bucket.

This project makes me smile! I hope you will find the same joy in your creation.

Sparkle and Sip! A Fancy Way To Rim a Glass

Supplies:

1 package Wilson Edible Accents Gold Stars
1 paper towel (folded)
2 plates
water
1 tablespoon of Karo light corn syrup
6 fancy party glasses

Directions

Generously wet the folded paper towel and place on a plate. Pour 1 tablespoon of Kayro light corn syrup onto the paper towel and let it settle. Pour the edible gold stars on the second plate in a small pile. Twirl the rim of each glass in a circular motion on the soaked paper towel. Avoid too much syrup. It should not run down the fancy glass. Gently twirl the rim in the edible gold stars. Carefully pour the beverage in each glass. Enjoy!
