A Valentine's Day Sweet Treat Charcuterie Board + How to Make Any Charcuterie Board Lovely and Enticing Every Single Time with One Tip

These beauties are all over social media and have maintained a position on the party “must-make” list for over five years now. I would say they are here to stay...

I make them for holidays, celebrations, binge watch weekends, and even toss them together quickly for drop-in guests with mix and match things from our refrigerator and cabinets. They are always a win.

When I make these, I often get the same question just before a participant digs in. It goes something like this…

“Gwyn, How in the world do you put so many things in a pile on a piece of wood and make it pretty and enticing at the same time?” -Genevive

Tiny Swirly Twirly Sugar Cookies Hearts

Yield: 120 Tiny Swirly Twirly Sugar Cookie Hearts

Ingredients + Supplies

Sugar Cookies

  • 2 cups cake flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Sparkling Charm Best Ever Sugar Cookie Cutouts Recipe

Royal Icing

  • 1 pound confectioners sugar, sifted
  • 5 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 1/2 cup (+/-) water, room temperature
  • optional: 1/4 teaspoon clear vanilla extract or, 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • optional: gel food coloring

1″ heart-shaped cookie cutter (This is a great set.)

Directions

Sugar Cookies

1. Sift flour, baking powder, cardamom, and salt into a medium mixing bowl.

You can use a whisk to mix if you don’t have a sifter.

2. On high speed in a large mixing bowl, mix the room temperature butter and sugar until fluffy and light in color. This step takes 5 minutes. Beat in the room temperature beaten egg, vanilla, orange juice, and orange zest. Mix until well combined.

3. Turn the mixer to low and add in the flour in two batches until just combined. stop when just combined! Over mixing the dough = one ?? ? tough cookie.

4. Divide the sugar cookie cut-out dough between two pieces of plastic wrap, shape into disks, wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour until firm or overnight.

5. Position oven racks in the lower thirds of the oven and preheat to 350° F.

6. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Working with one disk of dough at a time, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface dusting with flour as needed. Cut out tiny heart shapes with the 1″ cookie cutter. Place them on a/the prepared baking sheet/s 1 inches apart. If the dough becomes soft, refrigerate again until firm. Gather the scraps, wrap and refrigerate until firm, and cut out more cookies.

7. Refrigerate the cookie cutouts for 15 minutes until firm.

Sparkle Tip:

I use measuring strips for the perfect height and with a stainless steel rolling pin. I have not tried this dandy looking  thing, but it looks easy to use.

8. Remove the chilled cookies from the refrigerator and bake switching the pans 1/2 way through for 4 to 6 minutes. The sugar cookie hearts are done when they are slightly puffed and a light golden in color. Remove the cookies from the oven and leave them on the cookies sheets for 5 minutes to cool. Move the still warm cookies to a cookie rack to cool completely before icing them.

These little beauties only take a few minutes to cook.

All ovens are different in baking times. Keep an eye on your sugar cookies! The cookies are ready to come out of the oven when they are just puffed and are on the verge of browning on the bottoms. This ensures a soft cookie and is the secret to keeping them delicious in a container for a few days.

Sparkling Charm Royal Icing

1. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, add the sugar and meringue powder. Mix on low speed until combined.

2. Drizzle in the 1/2 cup of room temperature water continuing to mix on low speed until the all of the ingredients are incorporated. Turn the mixer to high and continue to mix until the royal icing becomes fluffy.

The royal icing is ready when it holds a ribbon-like trail on the surface of the mixture for 5 seconds when you raise the paddle/s before disappearing back into the royal icing left inside the bowl.

Perfect Royal Icing For Decorating Sugar Cookies

Add a teaspoon of water if the royal icing and resume mixing if it is overly thick.

Creating Royal Icing Colors

1. Separate the royal icing into small bowls as per the number of colors you plan to swirl.Create your colors by adding a small drop/s of the gel food coloring to each bowl and stirring into a solid color. Use wooden skewers to stir the colors.

Sparkle Tip: If your royal icing has a slight tint and you wish to have a solid white. Add a few drops of white food coloring. I keep this on hand for cake frosting and glazes. White Food Coloring is especially nice if you use organic powdered sugar as it turns into a light tan when water is added.

2. Move to next step quickly.

Swirling and Twirling

1. Place a large piece of parchment paper on a work surface with icing close by.

2. Optional: Dip several of the cooled mini sugar cookies into each solid colors top down before swirling. Let the Icing drip off for a few seconds. Turn them iced side up and give them a gentle shake left and right to smooth icing. Place on the parchment paper to dry.

3. Spoon each of the icing colors onto a plate. Use a knife to gently swirl the colors.

4. Dip each cookie top down straight into the swirly twirly icing. Lift straight up and let the icing drip off for a few seconds. Turn them iced side up and give them a gentle shake left and right to smooth icing. Place on the parchment paper to dry.

5. Bag the Tiny Swirly Twirly Sugar Cookie Hearts and tie with a pretty bow, or store them in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

A Little Something Special for Someone Special DIY: Hidden Message Necklace

            Directions

            1. Cut out the hearts and the felt pouch templates from Free Printable Hidden Heart Necklace Template. Place the pouch and two heart templates on felt and cut out. Line the pouch template back on top of the felt and use a hole punch in template circles to create two holes. Fold the pouch in half (straight edges) and use the hole punch again inside the two holes you just made. When you unfold you will have 4 holes lined up. (See above photo.) Set aside.

            2. Cut a 4 inch piece of thread and tie it around the pom pom. Pull tight! Set aside. (In photo above. Lower left corner.)

            3. Using two colors of thread, cut off  a 3 1/2 foot piece from each. Place them beside each other and fold them in half. Tie a knot about 2 inches from one end.

            4. Tie a second knot 1 inch away from the first knot and continue to tie knots spaced about 1 inch apart until you reach the other end.

            5. Lay the felt pouch in front of you. Cut two tiny pieces of of the fabric adhesive and peel one side of the backing from the tape. Place a piece of the tape in the two corners of the widest end of the felt pouch.

            6. Twist the bottom up toward the top and line up holes on one side of felt. Insert the knotted threads through the holes from the back to the front. Tie a knot and pull it secure against felt. Repeat this step with the opposite side.

            7. Peel the backing off the other side of the adhesive. Press the flaps into place on the front of the pouch. (Photo below.)

A Little Something Special for Someone Special DIY: Hidden Message Necklace

            9. Cut another piece of adhesive and stick the large heart to the small heart. Use a second piece to stick the hearts to the pouch. (Photo below.)

            10. Double knot the pom pom onto one side of the pouch and trim the ends. (Photo below.)

            11. Set an iron to high and press firmly for 60 seconds to secure the adhesive.

            5. After blended, return to microwave and heat for 10 seconds to re-melt.

            6. Give the liquid another quick stir and carefully pour the hot liquid into the containers.

Once upon a time, an eight year old little Georgia girl planted strawberries

                           ….and they became her favorite.

                                  The end.

Everyone in the south knows that on “tax day” strawberries are officially in season and perfect for the picking. Today we can pick up strawberries year round at the grocery store. They may not be as sweet as off the vine, but they are perfect for recipes.

Today I am sharing a super simple recipe for Pink Chocolate Strawberry Truffles.

            2 tablespoons heavy cream

            1. Place the strawberries in a food processor, and process until pureed.

            2. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove the seeds.

This will yield just about 1/4 cup. If you have more, save it for ice-cream or freeze it for a refreshing glass of water with lemon.

            3. Melt the white chocolate chips using a double broiler or microwave in 20-30 second intervals, stirring in between each interval to prevent overheating.

            Thoughts on Love and Relationships

The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. -Audrey Hepburn

February brings National Heart Month and Valentine’s Day. It is impossible not to think about affairs of the heart. Here are five thoughts on love and relationships.

THE ART OF SELF-LOVE. Everyone comes from different backgrounds. Sometimes self-love can be hard to achieve depending on the love that you were shown from those who should have loved you the most. Some people grow up in loving and encouraging families while others do not. When you have been hurt by circumstances you cannot control it is extremely hard to realize self-worth and love yourself.

Anytime you choose to enter any relationship, whether it be romantic, a friendship, or family, it could be difficult unless you love yourself first and enter into it whole. Entering a relationship empty and broken will cause your partner to fill in the broken pieces and leave them feeling miserable. You may end up shutting them out completely, giving them a reason to flee.

While you can’t control your outside circumstances, you can control the choices you make from this day forward with every relationship you choose. You have the power to make the decision to love yourself no matter what life has dealt you. Once you embrace wonderful you, you can offer all the relationships you choose complete love.

BE SOMEONE YOU WOULD LOVE. Before you can have an amazing relationship with anyone, you must be lovable yourself.

Anytime there is conflict in a relationship, it is always easier to blame the other party for what goes wrong before you consider you may be the person at fault. It is difficult to step back and take a long hard look at yourself and possibly realize you are the one who must make a change. A good way to start is by evaluating present and past relationships. Are you someone who loses friends often? Is there constant conflict in the majority of your relationships? Do you exhaust yourself attempting to impress others instead of being yourself, just as you are? Do you find yourself judging others or invalidating them with negative words? Do you find yourself telling untruths to impress others?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you must make the changes to ensure long-lasting and fulfilling relationships. Start by admitting that you are the problem. Put an immediate end to blaming others for your shortcomings and unbecoming behavior. Lastly, treat others as you wish to be treated.

LOVE DEEPLY. LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY. Choosing to let yourself go in a relationship can sometimes be difficult, especially when you’ve been hurt before. Avoid letting past relationships prevent you from experiencing the true joy of a healthy relationship. When you meet someone you feel drawn to, never hold back. Be fearless. Go all in. What you receive in return is worth it.

CHOOSING RELATIONSHIPS. In this beautiful world we live in, having an attitude of love towards others is a wonderful way to live your life. However, having an attitude of love and choosing relationships we invest love into are two very different things. With millions of people in this world we have an amazing opportunity for wonderful fulfilling relationships. Choose wisely. No matter the type of relationship, if someone continually mistreats you and destroys your personal joy, they do not deserve the privilege of your love. Choose to forgive them, wish them well, and remove yourself from one on one contact. Choose people who cultivate happiness your life and keep them close.

The Labor of Love. There are different types of relationships. Choose the relationships that are most important to you. Cultivate them with unconditional love and commitment so that they thrive. For relationships you cherish but are difficult to find time to invest in, that is okay. When you do have the time, drop them a line and remind them that they are loved by you.

Audrey Hepburn got it right, the best thing to hold onto in life is each other. So let’s do just that! Love yourself, be lovable, love deeply, choose wisely, and invest in love. It is worth it.

30 Layer Rose Velvet Crepe Cake

This is a perfect dessert for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion. Made with layer after layer of thin crepes and a sweet cream cheese filling, this ‘doozie’ of a desert tastes as good as it looks.

FYI This was meant to be a Red Velvet Crepe Cake. I was running low on red food coloring. What do you do in a pinch?  “Make Lemons into Lemonade.” …or in this case… “Red Velvet Crepe Cake into Rose Velvet Crepe Cake.” SMILE!  If you would prefer this to be a Red Velvet Crepe Cake, simply add three tablespoons+ of red gel food coloring.

30 Layer Rose Velvet Crepe Cake30 Layer Rose Velvet Crepe Cake

THIS IS A RECIPE FOR A 14 LAYER ROSE VELVET CREPE CAKE. I DOUBLED THE RECIPE and added one more layer.

            Crepe Ingredients

            2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons dark chocolate cocoa powder, unsweetened
            1/4 cup sugar
            4 large eggs, room temperature
            2 cups milk, room temperature
            2/3 cup buttermilk, room temperature
            1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon red food coloring gel (Use 3 tablespoons if you want to make a Red Velvet Crepe Cake.)
            2 tablespoons vegetable oil

            Cream Cheese Filling Ingredients

8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
            1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
            2 tablespoons milk

            Directions

In a blender, add the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, eggs, milk, buttermilk, vanilla, food coloring, and vegetable oil. Blend for 30 seconds.

            Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Heat a 10 inch non-stick skillet (this will make a 7 inch crepe) or a crepe pan to medium heat. Pour a little less than 1/4 cup of batter into the hot pan swirling quickly to cover the pan’s bottom.

When the edge of the crepe starts to pull away (about one minute), flip the crepe over and cook another 30 to 60 seconds.

30 Layer Rose Velvet Crepe Cake

Tip: Use a rubber spatula to loosen the crepe by peeling the edge back just a little. Then flip it way your fingers. Avoid flipping the crepe before it is done.

30 Layer Rose Velvet Crepe Cake

Remove the crepe from the pan and place on a cooling rack. Make your next crepe. This time, move the cooled crepe to a plate. The batter will make about 14 crepes. (Again, I doubled the recipe.)

            Cool the crepes completely.

In a mixing bowl, add the cream cheese, butter, and milk. With a hand mixer, beat until smooth. Slowly add the powdered sugar. Mix until smooth.

On a cake stand or a pretty plate, place a cooled crepe. Put a dollop of cream cheese filling on the crepe and spread evenly. Place another crepe on top of the cream cheese filling. Repeat, ending with the cream cheese filling on top. Add sprinkles.

Serve immediately at room temperature or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.30 Layer Rose Velvet Crepe Cake

This is a crowd pleaser. Take it to a party, make one for a special friend just because, or enjoy with someone you love!

This gem of a skirt can be worn with a t-shirt, a denim jacket, and a pair of cute sneakers, or pretty heels and a sweater. However you choose to wear it, it will make you twirl! Did I mention this is a super easy sewing project?! It is!

Let’s spend the afternoon together making something pretty.

Sew Easy! How To Make A Tulle Circle Skirt

            Supplies

            Notes

            1. Read this pattern completely before you begin.
            2. You can purchase a similar pattern.  Simplicity #1427.

            Tulle

            • My pattern is based on a 22″ desired length with a 6.25″ waistline cut, and a preferred five layers of stacked tulle. Yours will vary depending on your desired length, waistline, and favored number of tulle layers.
            • If you are not cutting on the fold of your material and cutting on the selvage edge because your tulle is not wide enough for your waistline and desired skirt length, you will need:

13 1/2 (+/-)  yards of flexible tulle in your favorite color. (This may vary depending on how many layers you want.)

            OR

            • If you are cutting on the fold because the flexible tulle is wide enough for your desired skirt length and your waistline, you will need:

8 (+/-)  yards of flexible tulle in your favorite color (This may vary depending on how many layers you want.)

1.5 yards of a knit material, in a color that matches your tulle. (A knit will not have to be hemmed.)

1 1/2 inch elastic, enough to fit comfortably around your natural waistline.

scissors, sharp for a smooth cut

            yard stick

            straight pins

            thread to match your fabric

            brown craft paper

            pen

            fabric chalk

sewing machine (I have this one because I heart to monogram things.)

optional: trim for skirt liner, yardage will depend on your desired skirt length.

There is going to be a little simple math! Are you ready? We can do this together!

            Pattern Instructions

Sew Easy! How To Make A Tulle Circle Skirt

STEP 1. How to determine the dimensions for your “waist” pattern cut:

            • Decide the length of your skirt. Let’s say you want your Sparkling Charm DIY Tulle Skirt to be 22″ long; measure the fullest part of your hips with a measuring tape (the skirt must fit over your hips when you pull it on).
            • Divide that number by 3.14.
            • Take the resulting number and divide it by 2.
            • Round the number up to the nearest 1/4.

            Example:

            • If the widest part of your hips measured 39, the equation would be 39 ÷ 3.14, then 12.42 ÷2 = 6.21. Rounded to the nearest 1/4 = 6.25.  So, your “waistline measurement” would be 6.25″ or 6 1/4″.

STEP 2. How to determine the dimensions for your “length” pattern cut:

            • Add the length to your “waistline” pattern cut to your desired length. (The result from the above equation.)

            Example for a 22″ length:

            • 22″ + 6.25″ = 28.25″

STEP 3. Make your craft paper pattern:

            • Cut your craft paper in a large square that measures larger than your final length measurement. For example, the final result above was 28.25″. Cut the craft paper at least 30″.
            • With the ruler and a pencil, measure your hip out from one corner. Keep pivoting the ruler as you move inward and make lots of dots as you go to form an arc on the paper.
            • Connect your dots with a pen.
            • Repeat the process from the same corner of your paper to find the bottom of your skirt line using the length measurement you added above.
            • Cut out your craft paper pattern.

STEP 4. How to Cut your Material

            Not Cutting on the Fold:

            • Sew two pieces of tulle side by side.
            • Fold the sewn tulle in half.
            • Fold your material in half again to make a smaller square that is 1/4 the original size.
            • Using the example numbers above, you would need a rectangle of tulle that was 57″ wide (28.5 + 28.5 = 57) when unfolded. *Note: The number of squares you have determines the number of layers your skirt will have. So, your tulle yardage may vary depending on how many layers your desire.

            Cutting on the Fold:

            • Cut squares of tulle that are big enough to fit your paper pattern when the square is folded in half.
            • Fold your material in half again to make a smaller square that is 1/4 the original size.
            • Using the example numbers above, you would need a rectangle of tulle that was 57″ wide (28.5 x 28.5 = 57) when unfolded. *Note: The number of squares you have determines the number of layers your skirt will have. Your tulle yardage may vary depending on how many layers your desire.

Use fabric scissors to cut along the waistline and bottom hemline. Unfold the tulle, and you will have a giant tulle donut! Make as many tulle donuts (layers) as you desire.

STEP 5:  Repeat Step 4 to cut the lining. If you are using the trim option, I recommend cutting your lining a bit shorter.

STEP 6. (Optional) Pin and Sew the Trim:

If you are choosing to add a trim to your lining:

            • Pin your trim along the hemline of the lining.
            • Sew the trim to the lining.

            STEP 7. Stack your Layers

            • With the liner at the bottom, stack your layers.

            Step 8. The Waistband:

            • Pin the elastic around your natural waist so that it feels snug but not too tight.
            • Trim the ends to 1/2″ long.
            • Fold the ends down and pin them in place. Sew those down to flatten them.
            • Use marking chalk to mark 4 equal sections on the waistline of your tulle circle. Do the same with the inside edge of your waistband.
            • Use the marks to line up your waistband with your fabric and pin with 4 straight pins at each mark.
            • Pin the bottom inside edge of the waistband onto the top of the fabric layers.

If your elastic waistline is smaller than your fabric opening, that is okay. In this case, simply pin the middle of each gap to the middle of the elastic section so you have 8 pins total holding your layers together.

            Step 9. Sew your Skirt:

            • Carefully, turn your pinned skirt inside out.
            • Sew a few stitches where a pin is holding the layers together.
            • While the needle is in the down position, pull the elastic towards you without stretching it until the fabric gap straightens out.
            • Sew along the waistband with a 3/4″ seam allowance on the fabric layers.
            • Continue this process of pulling the elastic and the fabric straight and sewing until you get all the way around the waistband.

Tip: Keep an eye on the number of layers you have making sure they stay tucked in line and are sewn down.

Step 10. Try on your new Sparkling Charm DIY Tulle Circle Skirt and give it a twirl. Consider making yourself the Sparkling Charm Sweetie Martini and sip it in your new skirt. Be sure to give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishment.
