How To Make Vintage Gumdrop Trees

The History of The Gum Drop

Gumdrops first appeared in the 19th century as early as 1801 and referred to as small sweets. In 1859 the name gumdrop was put into print in an advertisement in the Illinois State Chronicles for a candy shop owned by George Julier. They have stood the test of time and are still today a popular treat during the holidays on gingerbread houses.

How Do Gumdrops Taste?

Each gumdrop color has a different flavor and sometimes two. Purple gumdrops are usually grape or peppermint, while white could be licorice or clove. Black are always licorice and orange is sometimes anise or orange. Yellow is lemon or allspice and green is mint or apple.

What are Gumdrops Made of?

Gumdrops are brightly colored gummy candy made from gelatin or pectin and dusted with a light coating of sugar.

How To Decorate with Gumdrop Trees

Gumdrop trees add charm to your holiday decor. Below are five places to use them in your home.

  1. Fireplace Hearth
  2. Buffet
  3. Centerpiece
  4. Window Seal
  5. Bedroom Dresser

Supplies

Instructions

Break toothpicks into halves.

Starting at the point of the styrofoam tree working around the tree, insert a toothpick, add a drop of hot glue at the base of the toothpick, slide on a gumdrop gently pressing into the glue.

Repeat working to the bottom of the tree.

Have Fun!

How Do You Store Vintage Gumdrop Trees For Next year?

I have great news! You can keep gumdrop trees for at least 12 years. I am on twelve and counting. Let me add that we have had 12 military moves and they have been moved six times now and endured different temperatures crossing the country.

  1. Wrap the trees in three layers of acid free white tissue paper.
  2. Wrap them in a double layer of bubble wrap and secure with a piece of masking tape.
  3. Store them in a plastic container with an airtight lid.

How To Make The Best Homemade Eggnog

From my home to yours, I am sharing my family’s favorite holiday treat. Enjoyed by a warm fire in our riverhouse cabin on the Flint River (South Georgia), this holiday cocktail is so delicious and creamy we enjoyed it with a silver spoon.

What Is Eggnog And What is in it?

Eggnog is a traditional holiday drink dating back hundreds of years. It was known as milk punch. Served chilled, the first eggnog recipes were made with a mixture of beaten egg yolks, cream, spices, and straight bourbon, brandy or rum.

What Does Eggnog Taste Like?

Eggnog is a very sweet, lightly spiced, and creamy drink with almost a custard consistency.

Do You Cook The Eggs in Eggnog and Are they Safe To Eat?

You don’t cook the eggs in this recipe. FRESH eggs are necessary. (You can check them by placing them in a bowl of cold water. If they float they are bad.) The alcohol also aides in the removal of any bacteria.

What is the Best Alcohol For Homemade Eggnog?

THIS IS GREAT FROZEN! Top it with crushed peppermint! Voilà a second touch of holiday magic! PS IT is so delicious and creamy you can eat it with a spoon.

-gwyn

Occasions To Serve Eggnog

Eggnog is typically made with rum, brandy or bourbon, and Brown likes to start with a combination of dark rum and cognac. But there’s no need to go premium; he recommends using an affordable, high-proof VS cognac. The higher alcohol level will cut through the sweetness of the rest of the ingredients.

How To Make The Best Homemade Eggnog

Ingredients

  • 12 large fresh eggs
  • 1 quart whipping cream
  • 1 box 10x powdered sugar
  • 1 cup bourbon (I prefer Markers Mark. Avoid using blended whiskey. Bourbon is a straight whiskey.)

Garnishes

Instructions

Wash bowls, mixer attachments, and pitcher thoroughly with hot water.

In two separate mixing bowls, separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. In a third mixing bowl, add the cold whipping cream.

With a hand mixer on medium speed, mix the egg yolks until they turn a lovely custard yellow. Slowly beat in the bourbon until just combined. Set aside.

Rinse the mixer attachments. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Slowly mix in the powdered sugar until it is well blended. Set aside.

Again, rinse the mixer attachments. On high-speed, mix the whipping cream until stiff peaks are formed. Gently fold the egg white mixture into the whipped cream mixture. Then, gently fold in the beaten egg yolks until the color is solid.

Pour into a punch bowl or a pitcher. Serve with a silver spoon.

Garnish with peppermint sticks, crushed peppermint, a cinnamon stick, powdered cinnamon, a sprinkle of nutmeg, or Sparkling Charm Sugared Cranberries.

Notes

  1. Eggnog can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days in an airtight container. Simply give it a stir before serving.
  2. Leftovers can be frozen and eaten as ice cream.
  3. FRESH EGGS NECESSARY! To make sure your eggs are fresh, place an egg in in cold water. If it floats or stands it is not fresh. The egg should lay sideways.

King Cake Trivia

  • King cakes symbolize the Epiphany, a Christian feast day in January. It celebrates the visit of Three Kings who visited the Christ Child.
  • King Cakes are braided and oval-shaped to symbolize the unity of faiths and to portray the route used by the kings to get to the Christ Child.
  • King Cakes are decorated in traditional Mardi Gras colors. Purple represents justice. Green represents faith, and gold represents power.
  • A small baby, symbolizing baby Jesus, is hidden inside each king cake. The person who finds is is responsible in hosting the next Mardi Gras celebration and providing the next king cake.
  • King Cake is eaten between  Jan. 6, the feast of the Epiphany, to Mardi Gras Day, the day before Ash Wednesday.

Potlucks | Cookouts | Pool Parties | Picnics | 4th of July | Memorial Day | Just Because

What Do You Serve With Buttermilk Cornbread Salad?

Buttermilk cornbread salad goes with great with BBQ, pork chops, fried chicken, burgers, and steak. I prefer to eat it all by itself.

Southern Buttermilk Cornbread Salad

Ingredients

  • 2 packages cornbread mix, plus any additional ingredients called for on the package
  • (Substitute liquid for Buttermilk)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, extra for garnish

Fun Fact; Vidalia is a small town in Georgia where these beauties get their name.

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

The Best Coconut Cream Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon coconut extract
  • 1 – 14 ounce bag flaked/shredded coconut, sweetened or unsweetened
  • optional for texture: 1 cup unsweetened coconut chips
  • 1 – 3 ounce box coconut custard mix (Jello)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1 – 8 ounce container mascarpone cheese

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350° F. Flour and grease two 9 inch cake pans. Set aside.

Fit two round pieces of parchment paper into the bottoms of the prepared cake pans.

Prepare the coconut custard according to the package directions. (The whole milk will be used here.) Lay a piece of plastic wrap gently on top of the custard. Place the mixture in the refrigerator to set.

Add the cake mix, eggs, coconut oil, and buttermilk into a mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, combine until smooth. Two minutes will do the trick. Pour in just 1 teaspoon of the vanilla extract and the coconut extract. At a low speed, mix for 15 more seconds. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Carefully place the cake pans onto the center rack of the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. The cakes should be golden brown.

Set the cakes on a wire rack and let them cool completely.

Add the heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar, mascarpone cheese, and remaining 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to a medium mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, beat until until stiff peaks form.

Pick a pretty plate or cake stand and carefully turn one of the cakes onto it.

Peel the parchment paper away.

Using a fork or a wooden skewer, poke holes into the cake.

Generously spread the coconut custard onto the cake leaving a 1/2 inch space from the edge.

Let me show you how to style a quick  tablescape using beautiful evergreen branches and velvet ribbon.

I have been over the moon for velvet and satin ribbon this season. Visiting the White House I couldn’t help but gleam to see it adorning the trees and wreaths this year. Oh so PRETTY!

Just like my Autumn Fresh Table Runner DIY, tablescape decor doesn’t have to be costly and labor intensive. It can be as easy as a forage walk outside and a roll of pretty ribbon.

Scroll on down and let’s chat about ideas and options for a beautiful evergreen and velvet ribbon tablescape.

A Simply Lovely Tablescape: "Evergreens and Velvet Ribbon

How To Style A Holiday Table: Evergreen Branches & Velvet Ribbon

A Few Sparkle Notes Before You start:

  1. Eucalyptus is considered greenery. It can be found in most grocery stores year round. I pick it up at Trader Joe’s for 3.99 a bunch. I purchased everything fresh in this DIY at Trader Joe’s for less than $15.00. Also note, check the ends of the registers at Trader Joe’s before you pick your flowers. They most everyday have buckets of flowers and greenery that are free. They give one bunch to each guest at checkout.
  2. Eucalyptus smells wonderful and is perfect for drying and adding to dried arrangements. It also a great addition to wreaths and oh so pretty tucked in a napkin ring for a little something special in a place setting.
  3. Please read this DIY through to the end before you start.
  4. There are so many plates to choose from for seasonal table. I am a fan of Home Goods for inexpensive seasonal place setting pieces.

Supplies

Styling

  1. Drape, loop, and bend the velvet ribbon down the center of your table. Two or three rows and matching colors would be pretty too.

2. Fill the vases or jars with water and add you evergreens and choses extra greenery.

3. Place the small filled vases and jars along the ribbon.

4. Set your table and perhaps add an ornament or little bundles of greenery here and there for a little extra.

How about a Ginger Bread Cake For Christmas!

Doesn’t that sound delicious? It is!

Grab your apron and a mixing bowl. Let’s Get Busy!

PS If you decide to add the optional decor verses a good sprinkling of powdered sugar…

Have Fun! Okay!

MESSY = Added Charm!!!!!

Candied Ginger Gingerbread Cake

Ingredients

*See links to bundt cake pans in directions. ?

2 tablespoons cocoa powder to dust the bundt pan.
2 1/2 cups cake flour
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
4 tablespoons molasses
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup candied ginger, minced
powdered sugar or sanding sugar for sprinkling

optional:

white cotton candy for the fireplace smoke
white icing for trim
peppermint and ribbon for a wreath

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 325° F

2. Lightly grease and flour a bundt pan with cocoa powder. I used this one. This one is cute for individual cakes! …So is this one! Decisions! Of course it would be special to use an heirloom bundt pan from your grandmother or an antique store. ❤?

3. In a medium mixing bowl, sift the flour, ginger, cinnamon, ground cloves, nutmeg, salt, and baking powder. Sift a second time. Set aside.

4. Using a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy. Be sure to scrape the bowl while blending. Stir in the molasses.

5. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Stir in the vanilla.

6. Turn the mixer to low and add the flour mixture into the butter mixture a little at a time alternating with the milk until combined.

7. Stir in the minced candied ginger.

8. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Move a little batter up the sides of the pan. This will cause the cake to climb up the sides.

9. Bake the gingerbread cake until it is golden and springy to touch and a skewer comes out clean.

10. Transfer the cake to a wire wrack for 10 minutes. Then turn the cake out onto the rack to remove.

11. Cool to room temperature and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Optional: Add White Cotton Candy to the fireplace, white icing to trim, and a peppermint + bow for a wreath.

Have fun!
